Summary: We had an intimate gathering discussing the new and ongoing proposed regulations for Chat Control (EU), Social Media ban for u16s (UK), and the current global landscape (Canada, US, Australia).
Chat Control, and why today matters
- Today, 29 June, is the fifth and final EU trilogue on Chat Control (the Child Sexual Abuse Regulation), with a parallel push to revive the old voluntary scanning regime: two threats to private messaging at once.
- The method: detection orders that could scan Signal and WhatsApp, plus mandatory age verification that ties messaging to real-world identity.
- State of play: Council softened the worst under Denmark, Parliament has resisted blanket scanning, a summer deal is far from settled.
- Our framing: misdirected governmental capacity, the state aiming its power at everyone's correspondence rather than at offenders, and weakening encryption for all.
- Discussion: this is the live case for parallel infrastructure. What is our role today, and where do we point members (e.g. fightchatcontrol.eu)?
The UK debt campaign, and what it returned
- logos.co/ukdebt : UK debt interest is around £114bn in 2026, over £312m a day, now more than the cost of running the Department for Education.
